Generation of Type I X-ray Burst Oscillations by Unstable Surface Modes

چکیده
The Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer has detected nearly coherent oscillations in the tails of type I X-ray bursts from 17 low-mass X-ray binaries. The oscillations are thought to be generated by brightness fluctuations associated with a surface mode on the rotating neutron star. The mechanism that drives the modes is, however, not understood, since the burning layer is stable to thermal perturbations. We show here via a linear perturbation analysis that, even under conditions when pure thermal perturbations are stable, nonradial surface modes may still be unstable by the ǫ mechanism. Specifically, we find that, if helium-burning reactions supply a reasonable fraction of the outgoing flux during burst decay, nonradial surface modes will grow in time. On the other hand, the same modes are likely to be stable in the presence of hydrogen burning via the rp-process. The results naturally explain why oscillations in the decay phase of type I X-ray bursts are detected only from short-duration bursts. Millisecond Oscillations During Thermonuclear X-ray Bursts
I review the basic phenomenology and theory of the millisecond brightness oscillations observed during thermonuclear X-ray bursts from 13 of ≈ 70 accreting neutron stars in low-mass X-ray binaries. Compelling observations indicate that the oscillations are produced by surface brightness patterns on the rapidly rotating neutron stars. However, it remains to be understood (1) why the brightness p...

Coherent oscillations have been observed during thermonuclear (Type I) X-ray bursts from 14 accreting neutron stars in low mass X-ray binaries, providing important information about their spin frequencies. However, the origin of the brightness asymmetry on the neutron star surface producing these oscillations is still not understood. We study the stability of a zonal shearing flow on the neutro...
متن کاملThe Energy Dependence of Neutron Star Surface Modes and X-ray Burst Oscillations
We calculate the photon energy dependence of the pulsed amplitude of neutron star (NS) surface modes. Simple approximations demonstrate that it depends most strongly on the bursting NS surface temperature. This result compares well with full integrations that include Doppler shifts from rotation and general relativistic corrections to photon propagation. We show that the energy dependence of ty...

I construct a simple model of the convective burning layer during a type I X-ray burst to investigate the effects convection has on the stability of the layer to nonradial oscillations. A linear perturbation analysis demonstrates that the region is stable to nonradial oscillations when energy transport is convection-dominated, but it is unstable when energy transport is radiation-dominated. متن کاملSurface Modes on Bursting Neutron Stars and X-ray Burst Oscillations
Accreting neutron stars (NSs) often show coherent modulations during type I X-ray bursts, called burst oscillations. We consider whether a nonradial mode can serve as an explanation for burst oscillations from those NSs that are not magnetic. We find that a surface wave in the shallow burning layer changes to a crustal interface wave as the envelope cools, a new and previously uninvestigated ph...
